Capitalization is the writing of a word with its first letter in uppercase and the remaining letters in lower case.
When a first letter of a word is capitalized, it appears more important than it really is. But it has proper rules when to capitalize the first letter of a word. Here in this article we will look at important rules of capitalization

Important Rules of Capitalization

1. Capitalize the first word of a sentence or always start a sentence with a capital letter.

  • Thank you for being so honest with me.

2. Always capitalize the first person singular in any part of a sentence.

  • He and I are best friends.

3. Capitalize the first, last and important words in a title. But remember, we usually do not capitalize an article or short preposition in a title, unless they are the first word of a title.

  • Learn English as a Second Language.

4. Capitalize proper nouns in these cases:
A: Capitalize Specific person and things.

  • Ali Hussain, General Motors Corporation.

B: Capitalize days of week, months and holidays. Remember do not capitalize the names of the seasons.

  • Monday, February, Eid-Ul-Adha, spring, summer, fall, autumn, winter.

C: Capitalize any historical events.

  • World War Two

D: Capitalize the names of races, nationalities and languages.

  • Hazara, Pakistani, Hazaragi.

E: Capitalize names of religions and religious terms.

  • Islam, Muslims, Judaism, Allah, God.

F: Capitalize names of relatives (to show the family relationship when) when used with a name.

  • I am going to give a surprise to my Uncle Ali, but not to my other uncle.

G: We capitalize very high ranking government officials’ titles even when not followed by a name.

  • The President of Pakistan is due to visit the country next month.

H: Capitalize names of celestial bodies: Mars, Saturn, the Milky Way. Remember do not capitalize earth, moon, but when other celestial bodies are mentioned with we capitalize them too.

  • Can you tell me the distance from Earth to Mars?

I: Capitalize a title when preceding a name, but remember don not capitalize the title that when follow names.

  • The former Governor Aslam Raisani had a lot of haters.
  • Over 2,000 people protested against Aslam Raisani, governor of Balochistan.

5. Capitalize the directions, such as North, South, East and West when used as a part of the country, but do not capitalize directions when used as compass directions.

  • Warm weather is coming from the south.

6. Capitalize the names of trademarks.

  • Dew, Apple, Acer, Sony.

7. Capitalize the first word in as sentence that is direct speech.

  • She said,” We can win the match if we play well.”

8. Capitalize the first word of a sentence following a colon. Remember do not capitalize the first word in a list following a colon if the list is not a complete sentence.

  • We wanted to see three cities in Pakistan: Islamabad, Karachi and Quetta.
  • There are two choices at this time: run away or fight.

9. Capitalize the Salutations and closing in a letter, unless proper names is used with.

  • Salutations: Dear friend, My lovely darling.
  • Closing: Yours Sincerely, Love, With much love.

10. Capitalize initials, abbreviations and acronyms.

  • P.K AmirKhan, HDP, DVD, FBI.

Most of the things we capitalize in English are proper nouns that are names of specific, unique things. However, the rules of capitalization may be many, but here in this article we mentioned the most important capitalization rules in writing.
