There are thousands of civilians forced to give up on their lives and flee to some other countries every now and then. Refugees walk off their lives, homes, schools and colleges, and offices to look for peace and acceptance. The purpose of World Refugee Day is to raise awareness amongst us about the situation of refugees around the globe. Also, it is crucial for us to accept and help them with anything possible.

World Refugee Day is an international observance which people from the various cultures around the globe commemorate to showcase their recognition and condolence to the refugees. We observe world refugee day on June 20th every year.

By observing the world refugee day, we show them that we stand together in their difficult times. Also, we send out the message of peace, acceptance, and love to the refugees around the world. So that even if they are facing a tough time, they should know that there are still people against violence and racism.

Even though it is an international observance, it is not a public holiday.

History of World Refugee Day

On December 4, 2000, the United Nations Refugee Agency, the United Nations, and various other groups around the globe declared World Refugee Day to let people learn about refugees and their struggles. From then on, people from different countries commemorate this day to show their support to refugees.

Besides, each year has a specific theme. Some of the most recent or topmost are the following:

  • 2008: Protection
  • 2009: Home
  • 2010: 1 Refugee forced to flee is too many
  • 2012: 1 family torn apart by war is too many

Countries that Own Refugees in 2019

68.5 million people were forced to give up on their homes by the end of 2017 due to violence, conflict, and persecution. The above figure includes 25.4 million refugees, 40 million internally uprooted civilians and 3.1 million asylum-seekers.

Various countries show their generosity towards this number of people wholeheartedly. They have been doing their best to provide the best shelter and hearty acceptance. Here Lebanon has shown their topmost hospitality and ranks No 1.

The reasons for migration

Most often civilians are forced to migrate and give up on their lives are due to the following reasons

  • violence and war
  • the lack of opportunities
  • Climate
  • Natural disaster
  • cultural and religious freedom
  • political reason
  • civil war
  • lack of safety
  • lack of services
  • poetry
